Around the Town - August

Well my avid readers it is time once
more to place pen to paper, to pass comment
on my travels over the past weeks and to say
nice to see you back gaffer.
Just a short haul from the town centre lies that
well established social club Ashton United.
Always a warm welcome awaits you here and
on entering it’s doors it soon becomes
apparent that nothing had change. Greeted
with a warm smile as I ordered my tipple and a
few waves from old friends I made my way to a
comfortable spot to await the nights offering
of entertainment.
Janine was the name on the board and one that
did not rattle the old grey cells from any
previous encounters. Still in for penny in for a
pound. Right on que the said young lady
entered the fro and opening with a real bouncy
number soon captured the attention of the
gathered punters. With a well chosen selection
of songs both in beat and style our Janine more
than surpassed my expectations and kept me
wanting more of the same and judging by the
warm applause after each rendition I was not
on my own in enjoying some fine
entertainment. All but too soon the evening
came to a close, and time to reflect that there
was still some fine entertainment around.
If it's a change you are after then there
is no better place on aWednesday evening
than the Billy Goat Mossley. Here local
maestro- entertainer Guy Manrin conducts as
master of ceremonies a singing session. It’s a
place for artists from far and wide to come and
relax, enjoy themselves and get up and just
sing. Anyone’s welcome even if you don't sing
and just come to enjoy the atmosphere and
watch some of the gathered performers strut
their stuff. It soon gets full, but its well worth
the effort to get there that bit earlier so that
you can grab a seat. As well as offering the mic
for grabs, our Guy in-putts a few numbers
himself to keep things moving along. Nice to
see he has not lost his touch. With a steady
flow of the amber nectur as well as
entertainers it was a more than enjoyable
night, well worth the trip.
Picking up the Cheers mag and flicking
through the gig guide my eyes were drawn to
the fact that Ridgehill Working Mens Club
Stalybridge had once again joined Cheers.
Always known as a place for fine
entertainment I soon made time one Saturday
evening to pay them a visit. With a name of
Leo on offer, an entertainer whom I had the
pleasure of being entertained by before I knew
before entering the doors I was in for a good
night. Grabbing a seat I was soon in
conversation with some of the members, just
chewing the fat and passing the time before
the evenings entertainment entered the arena.
Small in stature but large in talent that’s what
our Leo’s about . From the first number it soon
became apparent that this guy had not lost any
of his learned stage craft, He was there to
entertain and that’s just what he did. With an
array of songs that covered all aspects of the
musical world Leo made sure that people were
listening. All too soon his first spot came to a
close to a loud round of applause leaving the
packed audience wanting more of the same in
his second spot. Many thanks to the Ridgehill
club for a great night here’s to many more
See you around folks
